New Delhi, May 25, 2025 — A renewed wave of COVID-19 infections is sweeping across India, with 257 active cases reported between May 20-24, 2025, fueled primarily by the JN.1 Omicron subvariant and its offshoots, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. In the last two weeks, 164 fresh cases have emerged, reflecting a 150% increase compared to the prior week, alongside a test positivity rate of 6.79%.

Kerala leads with 69 new cases, followed by Maharashtra with 44, Tamil Nadu with 34, and Gujarat with 15. New Delhi has recorded 23 cases, with states like Karnataka and Haryana also reporting upticks. Authorities note that most infections are mild, with no hospital admissions reported. Tragically, five fatalities have occurred, including two in Mumbai—a 59-year-old with cancer and a 14-year-old—and one in Karnataka.

The rise of new subvariants is sparking concern. Tamil Nadu confirmed one NB.1.8.1 case, while Gujarat reported four LF.7 cases, prompting heightened genomic monitoring. The Union Health Ministry has called for increased testing and strict compliance with safety measures like mask-wearing and hand hygiene. “Vigilance is crucial to keep this under control,” a health official stated. Hospitals are prepared with sufficient beds to manage any potential surge.

Currently, no booster shots are advised for the general population, but high-risk groups are under close watch. Citizens are urged to follow local health guidelines to curb the virus’s spread.
